A Message from OCEANS ’09 Biloxi Honorary Co-Chairs

Dear Conference Attendees, Exhibitors, and Patrons,

On behalf of the OCEANS 2009 MTS/IEEE Biloxi Conference Committees, we would like to welcome you back to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It’s been seven years since an OCEANS conference was last held along the Gulf of Mexico and we invite you to see our revitalized coastline.

Our conference theme “Marine Technology for our Future: Global and Local Challenges” reflects the focus of the oceans community acting locally to help globally. For this year’s event, your Local OCEANS Committee has selected four local topics of global interest. Sessions on Operational Oceanography, Coastal Restoration, Ocean Observing Systems and Lessons Learned from Recent Hurricanes will join our traditional topic areas to highlight recent issues, concerns, and solutions that extend around the globe.

The venue for OCEANS ’09 Biloxi was selected based on its rich history in the marine industry. Within driving distance of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Convention Center, visitors will find a plethora of large and small maritime businesses, universities offering marine science and related degrees and more than two dozen federal government agencies. With such a concentration of activity come numerous research, development and commercial opportunities and more oceanographers than anywhere else in the world.

The conference will offer a number of opportunities to explore our region, test the offerings of world-renowned chefs, visit historical places, golf and experience our Southern culture. Full-day tours to Mobile, AL, and New Orleans, LA, will be offered during non-conference days as well as a special VIP+ tour of Stennis Space Center. MS. Partial day tours will feature quaint “olde towne” areas along the coast, visits to local attractions and meals at favorite restaurants. From sunset schooner tours to shrimping expeditions, there is something for everyone along the Gulf Coast!

There are some new offerings at OCEANS ’09 Biloxi as well. Exhibitors will be able to participate in a Career Fair at no extra cost – students and seasoned professionals looking for a change will be paired with potential employers looking for top-quality candidates. We have added to programs to help inspire local students to consider careers in marine technology. The first program will bring classes of local students to the conference to experience hands-on activities they will remember forever. The second program focuses on 6th through 12th grade teachers, exposing them to the data, tools, and assets available locally and online for use in the classroom or during field trips.
